This collection of records is from the DOJ files relating to the Communist movement kept at the National Archives. The Gordon W. Prange Collection

The Prange Collection is the most comprehensive collection of Japanese-language materials dating from the Allied Occupation of Japan,1945-1952. The Collection comprises virtually everything published on all subjects during the first four years of the Occupation, 1945-1949; it includes books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, and related archival materials. The holdings of the Collection are vast and extremely rare and cover virtually all subject areas. The Collection includes: 82,000 books and pamphlets 16,000 newspaper titles and others. The Collection also contains approximately 600,000 pages of censorship documents, as well as extensive holdings of news dispatches (700,000 pages). The publications and documents which make up the Prange Collection were collected and maintained by the Civil Censorship Detachment of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP), which received copies of everything published in Japan, 1945-1949. These materials were given to the University through arrangements made by the late Dr. Gordon Prange, University of Maryland Professor of History who served in the Historical Section of General Douglas MacArthur's Headquarters. This Collection constitutes an extraordinary information and research base for enhancing both Japanese and American understanding of the historical developments which took place in Japan immediately following the war. The holdings cover virtually all subject areas concerning Occupied Japan. It is especially rich in history, politics, education, economics, fiction and poetry, including reprints, first editions, and children's books. The Collection also contains a substantial group of English language materials. In addition, the Collection includes the office files of press and periodical censors employed by the Civil Censorship Detachment of the Civil Intelligence Section of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in Japan, General Douglas MacArthur. The study of these publications and documents enables American, as well as Japanese and other scholars, to re-examine the relationship between Japan and the United States during this period.

Nearly 5,000 letters, memoranda, and special reports, written between 1880-1916, have been pulled together in this collection. These documents--coming from all over the empire--were circulated within the Cabinet in order to inform and influence decisions. Although covering all the major issues confronting the government, they vary in length and detail. Letters treating such minor issues as the retirement pay of a royal duke are part of this collection as well as those which discuss issues as important as the continuing menace of the "Russian Bogie" and the Boer war. A casual perusal of the collection makes the researcher aware of the many complex issues facing the Cabinet during these years. These documents are taken from the Public Record Office, the Royal Archives at Windsor, and the private collections of a number of British statesmen.

MICROFILM

This 4 reel microfilm collection emphasizes the fundamental unity and solidarity of the British people during the war. These reports were a pioneering attempt to close the gulf between administrators and the people they administered; to provide feedback which could be used to improve policy

making. Home Intelligence relied upon polls and surveys but the bulk of reports consisted of materials which was both collected and analyzed on principles of loose and vague impressionism. Many governmental departments found the reports useful and even Churchill would sometimes ask for an extract on a controversial topic.
